On Fridays I will post a Lean related Quote. Throughout our lifetimes many people touch our lives and leave us with words of wisdom. These can both be a source of new learning and also a point to pause and reflect upon lessons we have learned. Within Lean active learning is an important aspect on this journey because without learning we can not improve.
This quote beautifully captures the essence of Lean and continuous improvement. Transformation doesn’t require dramatic breakthroughs or sweeping change initiatives. It happens through small, deliberate improvements made consistently over time.
A 1% improvement often feels insignificant in the moment. It might be a simpler handoff, a clearer standard, a safer workstation, or one less defect than yesterday. On its own, it’s easy to dismiss. But Lean thinking recognizes that these small gains compound, building momentum and capability day by day.
Organizations that embrace incremental improvement shift the focus from perfection to progress. Teams are encouraged to experiment, learn, and adjust without fear. Over time, this creates a culture where improvement is part of the daily work—not an occasional event.
The real power of compounding improvement isn’t just better results. It’s better thinking. As people see their ideas make a difference, engagement grows, problems surface faster, and the organization becomes more adaptable to change.
Lean reminds us that sustainable excellence is built one small step at a time.
