Memorial Day is not about productivity, targets, or results. It is about remembrance. 

Lincoln’s words remind us that progress did not end with sacrifice—it was made possible by it. The freedoms and opportunities we benefit from today exist because others gave their lives in service to something larger than themselves. 

In Lean and continuous improvement, we often speak about unfinished work. Not as a failure, but as a responsibility. Improvement is never complete. Systems evolve. People learn. The future is shaped incrementally by those willing to carry the work forward. 

Memorial Day asks us to pause and remember those who never had the chance to finish their work—and to approach our own efforts with humility, gratitude, and purpose. 

Continuous improvement, at its best, is not about doing more—it is about doing better for others. As we reflect this weekend, may we recommit to improving our workplaces, our leadership, and our systems in ways that honor people, respect sacrifice, and leave things better than we found them.
