The Work Combination Table illustrates how different types of work interact within the process. Specifically, it shows:
- Manual work time
- Machine time
- Walking time
- Automatic equipment time
These activities are plotted against takt time, providing a clear visual of how an operator’s time is utilized. The Work Combination Table frequently reveals hidden waste such as waiting, imbalance between manual and machine activities, or excessive motion.
Because of this, it is one of the most effective tools for identifying opportunities to improve flow.
Standard Work Chart
The Standard Work Chart visually maps how the work is performed within the physical workspace. It typically includes:
- Operator movement paths
- Equipment locations
- Material positions
- Standard WIP locations
- Safety considerations
This chart provides a one-page view of the entire process. When displayed at the workstation, it becomes a powerful tool for training, coaching, and daily problem solving.
If the actual process differs from what is shown on the chart, it signals that something has changed and an opportunity for investigation and improvement exists.
Getting Started with Standardized Work
For organizations new to standardized work, the best approach is to start simple and focus on the areas where stability will have the greatest impact.
Good starting points often include:
- Bottleneck operations
- High-defect processes
- Safety-critical tasks
- High-volume repetitive work
The first step is always to observe the actual work. Leaders and improvement teams should go to the gemba and carefully study how the work is currently performed. This means documenting the sequence of tasks, measuring cycle times, and identifying how much work-in-process exists at each step.
It is critical to capture what is actually happening—not what procedures say should be happening.
Once the current condition is understood, teams can work together to define the best-known method. Involving operators in this process is essential. The people who perform the work every day often have the most valuable insight into how it can be done safely and efficiently.
After the standard is defined, it should be made visible at the workstation. Posting standardized work charts where the work occurs allows them to serve as training tools, daily references, and coaching aids.
Finally, remember that standardized work is not static. When improvements are discovered or conditions change, the standard should be updated. In this way, standardized work supports the cycle of continuous improvement:
