Lean Quote: Every Small Change Builds Confidence

On Fridays I will post a Lean related Quote. Throughout our lifetimes many people touch our lives and leave us with words of wisdom. These can both be a source of new learning and also a point to pause and reflect upon lessons we have learned. Within Lean active learning is an important aspect on this journey because without learning we can not improve.

“Every small positive change we make in ourselves repays us in confidence in the future.”   — Alice Walker

Continuous improvement, at its core, is about making small, intentional steps forward. In Lean thinking, we recognize that big transformations are the result of many incremental changes—each one a chance to learn, adapt, and grow. These small actions build momentum and create lasting improvement.

As Alice Walker reminds us, every small improvement we make doesn’t just enhance our process—it strengthens our confidence. Each success, no matter how minor, fuels our belief in our ability to shape the future. Lean leaders understand that confidence is built through action, reflection, and persistence.

The key is to try. Improvement comes from experimentation—taking action even when the outcome is uncertain. Practice builds capability, and capability builds confidence. The more we practice Lean thinking—observing, experimenting, and adjusting—the stronger and more capable we become at solving problems and driving change.

Take a moment this Friday to recognize the progress you’ve made this week. Celebrate even the smallest wins. Each improvement, however small, is a deposit in your future success and a powerful step toward building a culture of continuous improvement.
