Lean Quote: The Power of Reflection in Leadership

On Fridays I will post a Lean related Quote. Throughout our lifetimes many people touch our lives and leave us with words of wisdom. These can both be a source of new learning and also a point to pause and reflect upon lessons we have learned. Within Lean active learning is an important aspect on this journey because without learning we can not improve.

“IFollow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.”   — Peter Drucker

As this year comes to a close, it’s important to pause and reflect on the journey behind us. Reflection is not about dwelling on mistakes or celebrating successes alone—it’s about extracting lessons that guide us forward.

In Lean thinking, continuous improvement relies on learning. Just as we practice hansei (reflection) in Lean to identify gaps and opportunities, leaders must do the same with their own actions and decisions. By taking the time to ask What worked well? What could have been better? What will I change going forward? we create the foundation for growth and improvement in the new year.

Reflection also builds gratitude and perspective. When we look back, we not only see challenges but also the progress made, the people who supported us, and the resilience that carried us through. This balance of appreciation and learning strengthens our resolve to lead with humility and purpose in the year ahead.

Reflection turns experience into wisdom, enabling leaders to strengthen both themselves and their teams. As we prepare for the year ahead, let’s commit to making reflection a habit, ensuring each step forward is guided by clarity, purpose, and learning.
